DANCERKIDS, INC. 2008-2009 CLASS DESCRIPTION PAGE
Children and Teens have fun, make new friends, and grow stronger in body, mind and spirit, developing as individuals, and as "team members". All Dancers are Grouped by Age, Grade, Type of Class Desired, Day & Time Availability. Class sizes are limited to insure safety, fun, and individual attention for every student. Students at every age are empowered to create their own dances, and learn to apply age appropriate dance technique in original choreography created especially for each class by their professional instructor/mentors. Grades 2-12 Elementary, Middle, and High School “COMPANY” classes are available for interested students in who enjoy learning to choreograph and performing more than 1 dance per year, in shows 2-3 times per year. Costumed Spring Recitals at Pace Academy for ALL Students held in Early May, (except for the youngest 3’s-who begin Dance in January ’09- their costumed “recital in class” is at their last class in April).
Most classes are taught by professional dance educator, Martha Candler (BFA & 7 Yrs exp.), BUT some Company classes may also be taught by former dancer/choreographer, educator, Jan Duffy (BFA & 27 yrs exp), as her schedule permits.
‘08-’09 Minimum Class Size is 6 students for ALL classes! Maximum class size varies by the average age of each class: For “Parent/Child” and “Tiny Ballerinas” classes, the maximum is 8! Old 3/Young 4 maximum is 10. Old 4, 5/6 max: 10-12. GRADE 1 and OLDER: Maximum is 12-14-but every effort is made to keep class sizes smaller than at most dance studios!
CLASSES BEFORE 3PM: The more availability you have, and the earlier you register, the better the chance your dancer will be placed in the most appropriate and most convenient class! Early Registration also helps insure your class will have the required number of students to “make”! If you have special needs, please attach a separate piece of paper with all the details!

(Arrive at 12:45 if not eating at PRUMC). >Lunch Children bring a sack lunch and drink, dance clothes/shoes, all labeled with their name (preferably in 2 name-Labeled Gallon Size Zip-Lock bags placed in child’s School Book Bag-much easier to keep up with than a lunch box). Lunch Dancers MUST be able to use toilet independently, wash own hands, clean up after lunch, and be able to change own clothes/ shoes with just a little help from teacher- so we can all spend more time dancing! Parents coming from off-campus are asked to avoid the Carpool Lines, and to park in a parking space to walk child to and from dance class. Please lock your cars and do not leave children unattended in your vehicle. All Parents come to the Studio Door to Pick Up dancers at 1:30PM or a late pick-up fee will be charged!
These online retailers carry for all ages-leotards, tights, shoes, bags, and loads of dance gift items too: http://www.allaboutdance.com http://www. nydancewear.com http://www. dicountdancesupply.com
All Ballet students need pink, “real”, ballet shoes with elastic straps sewn across the ankles-(not Target “house shoes” that are sold as “ballet shoes”-that have no elastic ankle straps and are safety hazards)!
For Ballet Students, we prefer pink Bloch Student Ballet Shoes or Capezio Daisy Ballet shoes sold at the above online retailers –(along with leotards, tights, etc.), also sold locally at Dance Fashions on Roswell Rd in Sandy Springs (cost around $15; Ask for 10% DancerKids Discount at Dance Fashions), but you may also purchase ballet shoes and tights and/or leotards at Shapes Dance and Aerobics in Dunwoody, or Center Stage Dancewear- (on the Square in Marietta-in the same bldg as Eddie’s Trick Shop), or Buckles near PRUMC, or most Stride Rites, or Nordstrom Children’s Shoe Department, or any Payless Shoe Store or Wal-Mart (though Payless and Wal-Mart shoes cost same as Bloch student shoes!) We cannot recommend inferior shoes sold thru Dance Studios!
LEOTARD (bodysuit): ALL students (every age and grade) need to wear a Dance Leotard to class-any color or style is fine, skirts or shorts are okay with leotard. Please put name, (or better yet- your phone number!)- in every single article of clothing your child brings to dance, including bags, street shoes AND dance shoes!
TIGHTS: All Ballet or Pointe Students, including Students in All Classes that Meet Before 3PM, will need pale pink footed tights for the Recital, but tights are optional for class- except for Pointe students who must wear pale pink “convertible” tights to class. “Lunch & Dance” students will NOT wear dance tights to class unless they wear the very same tights to school that day-it takes too long for them to get dressed otherwise; these students wear thin white socks to school that can also worn with their ballet shoes without requiring a change.
MODERN/JAZZ (and COMPANY classes): Depending on the costume/s, tights or jazz shoes may be needed for performance. With a LEOTARD of any color or style, modern/jazz Grade 2 and Up may wear a t-shirt over leotard with Soffee type gym shorts, or jazz pants, stretchable leggings, or capris- of any color. Jazz shoes are optional unless required for costume, in which case you will be given several weeks notice in advance- if you choose to purchase Jazz Shoes, please request NON-MARKING soles!

About DancerKids Curriculum and Methods:
DancerKids, Inc. program ……..
is influenced by Piaget and uses brain-based teaching methods to enhance learning so that the process of acquiring and applying dance technique is more personally meaningful to students. In a “good” classical ballet, repetitions and rote memorization of stylized shapes and movements are traditionally employed to develop dancers’ “line”, technical proficiency, strength, flexibility, fluidity, and “motor memory”-but as young bodies are growing, this type of drill needs to be age-appropriate for sound orthopedic reasons. Jan Duffy believes children’s minds and spirits should not be wasted while they wait for their bodies to mature, and so every DancerKids’ class provides students with more than technical drill and exercises. DancerKids have the opportunity each lesson to experiment, add to, and rearrange their traditional class work to make their lessons more personally meaningful. Individually, with a partner or a small group, the dancers problem solve, creating original movements to use alone, and in combination with traditional dance technique. Through improvising and experimenting both independently and collaboratively, students develop greater artistic, visual, kinesthetic and spatial awareness, as well as the ability to think critically, and problem -solve quickly, creatively, and confidently-they think it’s great fun! Over time, these well-exercised, intellectual “habits of mind” (common to professional choreographers, engineers, brain surgeons, inventors, and scientists) begin to influence the way many of our young dancers approach tasks in and outside the dance studio-which is a sure sign that real learning has taken place.
Director and choreographer, Jan Duffy, a former professional dancer with 25 years teaching experience, is also an educational consultant, and creative movement specialist. Ms. Duffy trained with the modern dance companies of Twyla Tharp and Merce Cunningham, with NYC Ballet principals Stanley Zompakos and Jacques D’Amboise, Duncan Noble (North Carolina School of the Arts), and with Ken Miller (“Pippin”, “Chicago”, “Evita”, “Sugar Babies”). Author of the Fulton County Schools’ Dance Curriculums, a Young Audiences soloist for 15 years and a member of the Dance faculty of Woodward Academy for the past 12 years, Ms. Duffy co-owned Lee Harper and Dancers Studio from 1980-1998, founding and directing the 500 member LHADS Children’s School (now defunct), creating its successful and innovative curriculum, training its 10 person staff , and teaching, choreographing and directing the very same dance companies for children and teens she continues to lead today through the nonprofit 501 c (3) organization, DancerKids, Inc. At PRUMC since 2000, Jan Duffy is assisted by college student/dancers she has personally trained, and professional colleagues she invites to teach and choreograph as Guest Artists-all enjoy mentoring and teaching children and teens; all have college dance degrees and/or experience as professional dancers and choreographers-some of these professionals are themselves graduates of the original DancerKids and Just Us Companies-and share Jan’s interest in creating both enthusiastic future dance audiences, and tomorrow’s dance artists.
